The top picture is Peanut, the middle picture is Jewel, and the bottom picture is Jewel hiding behind her brother.
These are just a few snapshots I took a few minutes ago. I will take better pictures and put them on my website this weekend. My website program is on our desktop and since the babies have arrived, I have been up in our bedroom with them on the laptop.
I have decided to change Pebbles name to Jewel - Gemma's name was "Precious Lil' Gem", so how perfect is, "Gemma's Precious Jewel". She is such a pretty girl - I think the name Jewel fits her well. The two munchkins are eating 4 cc's every 3 hours. I was a little worried because they only had one bowel movement since they were born, but today they finally had another one. Until puppies are about 3 weeks old, they are not able to poop and pee on their own, they have to be stimulated, something their moms do when they lick them. So after every feeding I take a soft warm damp cloth and wipe their little bottoms for them to go potty. It is very much like cleaning a baby's bottom.
Bon Bon and her new babies that arrived today will be coming tomorrow. I am driving to Omaha to pick her and her babies up and then driving back home...it will be a long day. I raised a litter of Bon Bon's puppies about a year ago. She is a wonderful mom, and we are hoping she will help take care of our two little ones. :0) She has 3 puppies, so I will be making sure she is eating ALOT of food, my moms love their food I make them. I mix the Merrick dry dog food with Merrick canned Turduckden, cottage cheese, pumpkin, goats milk, and then a NuVet vitamin. I am pretty excited to see Bon Bon again and meet her new babies. It will be fun having a few more to raise with the other 2.
Thank you to everyone who has posted and e-mailed while we are going through this very devastating time. All of your words are very comforting and mean so much to us. I know everytime I read e-mails I start to cry. I think about Gemma everytime I am with her babies, which is all of the time. I talk to them about their mom and it is just so sad they will never know how great of mom they had. She was the best mommy ever with her first litter. She just loved her babies.
Peanut and Pebbles are doing very well eating from their bottle, which is very relieving. I lay them on my chest and they scooch all the way up by my neck and just snuggle in. They try and suck on my skin, and nuzzle their noses on me, it is just so sweet. I hope things continue to go well here, I don't know if I could take any more loss right now. I am pretty exhausted, but the babies keep me going along with everything else. Right now, they are eating every 3 hours. I love watching them eat, they are just so precious.
I am going to attempt to write everyday if not then every other day about hand raising puppies. It is definitely A LOT of work right now and exhausting, but hopefully after the next few weeks things will begin to get better. I will take pictures of them this weekend.
I have some good news to share, Trixie and Comet are now bred! She will be due in June. Choxie and Juicy are both in heat now too, they will be bred sometime next week....for more babies due in June. June will be a pretty exciting month and it is the beginning of summer, so that will be perfect. :0) I will also start writing about the stages of puppy development while in the womb.
Gemma went into labor last night after I got home from school at about 10:00 pm. I took her into our vet for a c-section about 11:00, the first one out was a boy and he was bigger and breach so there is no way Gemma would have been able to have him on her own. The second one out was a girl, she was smaller than the boy....she looks tiny and dainty.
Gemma was fine through her c-section until it came time for her to wake up and come up from her surgery. It took her awhile to try and come around and when we thought she was there, her feet starting moving and her heart stopped. Dr. Budding was listening to her heart before, he said she was doing good and then all of a sudden it stopped. Him and Kay worked on her trying to get her to come back for along time and she was just gone. I was in with them the whole time and everything went well until the very end. Dr. Budding and Kay were both shocked and can't figure out what happened. We looked at her x-ray again to see if there was something internal, but everything looked fine. I was in shock and could not believe I lost my baby girl. I came home with 2 absolutely adorable new babies but without my baby girl. I am going to pick her up tonight to bring her home to bury her. We are all very devastated. Now, I will be hand-raising the two puppies. I didn't sleep last night, just cried alot and then fed the puppies about every 2 hours. I am hoping to get them on a schedule and maybe things will be easier- but I am not counting on it. I think I am going to be a walking zombie for about the next month. So far, they are both eating very well out of a bottle and are thriving. I hope they continue to do well. The boy weighs 5.6 oz, he looks alot like Gemma as a newborn, same coloring and markings. He is precious....I am calling him Gemma's lil' Peanut. Our nickname for Gemma was lil Peanut. The girl looks alot like Bam Bam, she looks gold with a reddish tint to her, I am calling her Pebbles....she is gorgeous. I will take pictures one day this week after things settle down.
Gemma is now on day 56! Her temperature went back up this morning to 99.5. When I got home, there was poop in the living room and it was kind of yucky so I took Gemma's temperature again and it was down to 98.7. I am going to take it again tonight at 10:00 and see if it is the same, dropping, or rising. If it stays the same or drops then we may have puppies tomorrow or Wednesday. I will check it in the morning too and see where we are at! Scott is going to be staying home tomorrow so he will be keeping a very close eye on her. :0) I took pictures of her nursery....I will post the pictures soon and we will hopefully have babies in there soon!
I am SUPER anxious and excited!! Thank you all for posting your guesses, it is nice to see what everyone thinks. :0)
I started taking Gemma's temperature yesterday and it is continuing to go down. I took it yesterday morning and it was 99.2. A dog's normal temperature is 100 - 102.5. I took Zoey's to make sure my thermometer was working right and hers was 100. I took Gemma's again last night and it was 99, then this morning it was down to 98.8. I take it once in the morning and once at night. She does not like it....she runs from me when she sees me getting the thermometer out. I guess I can't really blame her, I would not want a thermometer stuck up my bottom either. When her temperature drops down to 98.2, we should have puppies within 24 hours. She is on day 55 and her milk is in. I checked her on Friday and it wasn't in yet, then on Saturday her boobies had really filled in and I could tell her milk had come in. I checked....and it is there! I am sure it will be sometime this week, just not sure exactly when. Stay tuned.....I will posting probably everyday because I am really excited and I love to share the excitement!
If anyone wants to post guesses on when she will have them and what she will have that would be kind of nice to see!
My guess is, she will have them on Thursday, there will be one girl and one boy, and they will weigh 4 oz. each.
Gemma's belly is continuing to grow and the babies move and kick all of the time. She loves sitting on my lap and I can feel them on my legs. It won't be too much longer, she in on day 53, so we have 10 days officially. Although, I would be really shocked if she goes that long. I am so excited for her itty bitty Shih-Tzu puppies to arrive!
Trixie will be bred to Comet this coming week....I think starting on Sunday, but we will see if she is ready then. Their tiny Shih-Tzu puppies are going to be so adorable. This will be a first breeding for both so I am really anxious for this litter!!
Choxie is swelling so she will be coming into heat soon. Bopsy and Foxie are swelling, but I am pretty sure I will wait until their next heats to breed them.....so Fall / winter 2010 we will be expecting MORE itty bitty tiny Imperial Shih-Tzu puppies!!!
It is going to be a gorgeous weekend here, My plan is to open up the doors downstairs and work on our remodeling project!
Have a good weekend everyone and I will write more as I have more news to share. :0)
I took Gemma in for her x-rays today. She is going to have 2 puppies!! They look pretty big and she still has 2 weeks to go.
She had 2 puppies last time and delivered early, on day 59 so we will see what she does this time. I will be watching her like a hawk and will be keeping my vet updated on how she is doing. He is aware I may be calling him in the middle of the night as it gets closer if I need to. My vet is wonderful!
Gemma is 49 days into her pregnancy from her first breeding. Saturday night I could see and feel the babies moving in her belly. I like to play games with them. I gently touch an area and they kick or move. It is amazing seeing and feeling the babies move. Gemma just lays on her back and loves her belly being rubbed.
I am super excited to announce TRIXIE IS IN HEAT!!!!!
Trixie will be bred to Comet in about 1 1/2 weeks to our adorable little Comet.
This will be both of their first litters so I am really excited to see what they will have.
I thought this was wonderful and perfect news to share for Easter. :0)

I shaved Gemma down this afternoon....well as much as she would let me. :0)
I am going to try again and hopefully get her feet completely done tomorrow.
You can see her nice little round belly, she is such a tiny tot! I made her a page for 6 weeks pregnant,
but she only has about 19 days to go. I hope you enjoy the pictures and have a wonderful Easter!
We have finally hit weather in the 70's.... Woo Hoo!! It is hard to believe Easter is this Sunday. I hope everyone has a wonderful Easter weekend.
Gemma's belly continues to grow. I am going to groom her and shave her down this weekend so I will take some pictures and post them. Her belly is nice and round....I am really excited about finding out how many puppies she is going to have. They are going to be so cute! I am getting puppy fever because it has been awhile since we had new babies. It has been a nice break, but I am ready!
I made some more changes on our planned breedings page. I am almost positive Zoom is ready to breed now so I am going to breed Zoom to Juicy when she comes in. I am really excited about that breeding. Then to mix things up a bit, I am going to breed Tinka to Bam Bam, and Trixie to Comet! I am soooo excited, I can not wait until the girls come in.
